Wild Seed is the first book chronologically in Octavia E. Butler’s acclaimed Patternist Series. Set across centuries and continents, this novel introduces readers to Anyanwu, a shapeshifter with healing powers, and Doro, an immortal being who transfers his consciousness by taking over bodies.
Born in West Africa, their clash spans hundreds of years as Doro attempts to breed a race of superior humans—while Anyanwu fights to preserve her freedom and humanity. The story explores power, immortality, gender dynamics, African spirituality, and survival—all wrapped in Butler’s signature mix of sci-fi and social commentary.
This is a powerful Afrofuturist masterpiece—part historical fantasy, part science fiction, and entirely original.
